Recent genetic work has eliminated the sub species in this group with all of them getting their own species name. Therefore, this is now just “virginianum”.
This is a lovely shade and drought tolerant perennial of dry, rocky woodland and barrens, often on limestone rich soil. This is a good plant for partially shady, well-drained areas, and is taller and clump-forming (though it spreads readily from seed) rather than the spreading form other species have. It’s 1”-2” bright yellow blossoms are prolific, blooming from April-Sept. The plant is 6”-12” tall. zones 5-8. VA. ecotype.
