Ozark Bluestar (also called shining bluestar) is similar to Amsonia tabernaemontana. It is an upright, clumping perennial with narrow willowy leaves and light blue flowers in May. Plants are typically 3-4 feet tall and about as wide. The difference between this and the other similar bluestar is that this one is more stiffly erect, has thicker glossy leaves and the seed pods are pendulous rather than erect. This species also has a more mid-western distribution. Preference is for drier, well drained soil and is often found in the wild on bluffs and gravel bars along rivers. Very adaptable though to almost any soil condition. Zone 5-9. MO ecotype.
